University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign assistant professor Syed Bahauddin Alam, a nationally recognized leader in artificial intelligence for science and engineering, was selected and invited as a U.S. Delegation AI Expert by the U.S. Department of State and the U.S. Mission to Vietnam for high-level engagements in Hanoi focused on artificial intelligence, digital transformation, engineering education and the future high-tech workforce.
The U.S. Mission formally invited Alam for on his expertise in AI research, noting that his participation would support Vietnam’s workforce-development priorities and the broader U.S.–Vietnam Comprehensive Strategic Partnership.
Featured U.S. speaker at bilateral AI and workforce panel
Alam’s first major engagement was the bilateral seminar “Education and Workforce Development in the Digital Era,” organized by the U.S. Embassy Hanoi and the Ho Chi Minh National Academy of Politics.
As a featured U.S. speaker in the session on Higher Education Innovation and High-Tech Workforce Training, Alam presented “Integrating Artificial Intelligence and Digital Twins into Advanced Engineering Curricula: Preparing the Next-Generation High-Tech Workforce.”
His remarks argued that engineering education must move beyond simply teaching students to use AI. Instead, future engineers should learn to integrate fundamental physics, real-time sensing and data, scientific computing, AI, uncertainty and engineering decision-making.
“The future competitive advantage will not come simply from engineers knowing how to use AI,” Alam said. “It will come from engineers who know when to trust AI, when not to trust it, and how to integrate it safely into the physical world.”
The event and Alam’s participation were highlighted by Bảo vệ Pháp luật, the Ho Chi Minh National Academy of Politics, and Báo Thế giới & Việt Nam.
U.S. delegation engagement with Vietnam’s Ministry of Education and Training
As part of the U.S. delegation, Alam participated in a high-level education dialogue at Vietnam’s Ministry of Education and Training (MOET). Vice Minister Pham Quang Hung received the U.S. delegation, led by U.S. Chargé d’Affaires Courtney Beale, for discussions on education cooperation between the United States and Vietnam.
The dialogue addressed university partnerships, faculty mobility, emerging technologies and development of the future workforce, connecting advances in AI with broader national priorities in education, innovation and international collaboration.
“Some of the most consequential questions in AI are no longer purely computer-science questions,” Alam said. “They are questions about science, engineering, energy, education, infrastructure and people.”
Featured U.S. Embassy Invited Talk
The U.S. Embassy separately featured Alam in a public program at American Center Hanoi titled “Super Intelligence and Digital Twins: Shaping the Future of Engineering.” where he presented Speaking to engineering students, researchers, technology entrepreneurs and academic partners on
“Energy-Efficient Artificial Intelligence and Digital Twins with Agentic Discovery: Shaping the Future of Engineering in the United States”
The program extended the week’s policy discussions into a public-facing technical conversation about trustworthy AI, scientific computing and the future of engineering.
The selection adds an international dimension to Alam’s rapidly growing national profile. Alam is an NSF CAREER Award recipient and a U.S. Department of Energy Distinguished Early Career Award recipient. He was selected for the National Academy of Engineering’s U.S. Frontiers of Engineering 2026 and by the National Academy of Sciences as a U.S. participant in the 2027 U.S.–Arab Frontiers of Science, Engineering, and Medicine Symposium. He also serves as one of 11 nationally appointed members of a National Academies committee examining foundation models for scientific discovery across the U.S. Department of Energy and was named a National AI Leader and Expert in Illinois’ official response to the White House National AI Action Plan. The Vietnam engagement further positions Alam’s research at the intersection of national AI leadership, advanced engineering and international scientific engagement.
Additional international-language coverage of the Vietnam dialogue appeared through Vietnam.vn, including Vietnamese, English, German, French and Dutch editions.
