Making a difference

Engineers use plasma processing in semiconductor production and in cutting-edge manufacturing technologies. These engineers also explore fusion, the power of the sun, as the next step in energy production.

Careers and employers

Graduates in this area find positions at global semiconductor processing companies such as Intel Corporation, Lam Research, ASML, and Applied Materials, as well as Starfire Industries, a Champaign, Ill., company that provides plasma source and particle accelerator solutions. Graduates studying fusion energy also can work in academia or for government agencies, including Department of Energy national laboratories.
