George H. Miley, Emeritus Professor of Nuclear, Plasma, and Radiological Engineering at Illinois, is one of four authors of the recently published book, Lasers with Nuclear Pumping.

The book covers the history of Nuclear Pumped Lasers, or NPLs, with important results and stages of NPL development in The Russian Federal Nuclear Center as well as other Russian and international laboratories, including in the United States. The basic science and technology behind NPLs along with potential applications are covered throughout the book.

This is the first comprehensive discussion of NPLs, covering 40 years on the subject.

Throughout his 50-plus year career at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, Miley has developed expertise in fusion energy systems, plasma engineering, low energy nuclear reactions in solids, direct energy conversion, and reactor kinetics as well as NPLs.

Books he has previously written or co-written include Inertial Electrostatic Confinement (IEC) Fusion; Life at the Center of the Energy Crisis: A Technologist’s Search for a Black Swan; Edward Teller Medal Lectures; Principles of Fusion Energy; Fusion Energy Conversion; and Direct Conversion of Nuclear Radiation Energy.

Miley’s latest book, written with S.P. Melnikov, A.A. Sinyanskii, and A.N. Sizov, has been published by Springer Publishing.
