NPRE hosts 6th International Symposium on Liquid Metals Applications for Fusion

Fifty-five scientists from 12 countries have been drawn to the Urbana campus this week for the 6th International Symposium on Liquid Metals Applications for Fusion that NPRE plasma/fusion faculty have organized and are hosting.

The bi-annual conference on liquid lithium and liquid metals applications in fusion devices focuses on the latest results, status and future of liquid metals as scientists enter a new era of fusion with the construction of the ITER facility. Being built in southern France, ITER is the world's largest tokamak, a magnetic fusion device intended to prove the feasibility of fusion as a large-scale and carbon-free source of energy based on the same principle that powers the Sun and stars.

ISLA 2019’s program spans nine areas of liquid metal research from basic liquid metal properties to the technological applications in current fusion experiments. Speakers participating are from Canada, China, Germany, Italy, Japan, Mexico, Poland, Russia, Spain, The Netherlands, the United Kingdom and the United States.
