Engineering Council recognizes Becky Meline for advising efforts

Becky J. Meline, Coordinator of Academic Programs for Nuclear, Plasma, and Radiological Engineering at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, has been recognized as one of the top student advisors in the College of Engineering.

Meline was presented the Engineering Council Outstanding Advising Award on April 23. The award honors the top 10 percent of engineering advisors.

Meline joined the university in 2003. Her first position was with NPRE and she has stayed in the department due to in large part because, she said, “I have had supervising Department Heads who show that they value my contributions and who give me a lot of autonomy in my role which is important to me. And being with a small department I get to work closely with our faculty and students and directly see the impact that I can have.”

Meline finds it gratifying “helping students reach their goals, whatever they might be for that person – to be admitted to graduate school, get their first professional job, to graduate with an engineering degree from Illinois.

“Every student’s experience is unique to them, some face very real challenges. It’s great to be able to see them grow, not only in terms of academics and research but also as individuals.

“Sometimes past students contact me after they’ve graduated to update me on what they’re doing and to say thanks,” Meline continued. “Their thanks to me would be helping someone else out when they have the opportunity to do so.”

The recognition is appreciated, she said. “Thank you to the students who nominated me - we really do have great students!”
