In Spring 2019, construction began on a three-story addition to the south face of Talbot Laboratory. The Department of Nuclear, Plasma, and Radiological Engineering will share the new space with the Department of Aerospace Engineering, also housed in Talbot Laboratory. The addition will enhance the educational experiences of NPRE students by giving them access to state-of-the-art laboratories for radiation measurements and nuclear materials.
Altogether, NPRE will gain about 2,100 square feet of space, including the two new laboratories and some office space to ease overcrowding in the original Talbot Laboratory building.

The Grainger College of Engineering instructional labs.
The Nuclear Materials Laboratory will ensure that undergraduate NPRE students have the opportunity to perform experiments that test materials used in nuclear reactors. It will ensure our undergraduate students have the best training and education as they enter the workforce or attend graduate school.

The space will provide students hands-on learning opportunities in radiation detection, nuclear medical imaging, and nuclear medicine therapeutic technologies.
The Radiation Measurement Laboratory will be dedicated to teaching both undergraduate and graduate students techniques for radiation detection using a wide variety of state-of-the-art instrumentations that are utilized to study radiation detection and radioactive decay.
