NPRE students tour Wolfram Research Company

Wanting his students to see what a "real high tech firm looks like," NPRE Assistant Prof. Yang Zhang recently arranged for his class to tour Wolfram Research Company, one of the world's most respected computer, web, and cloud software companies.

Started in 1987 by Stephen Wolfram in Champaign, Illinois, Wolfram Research is a pioneer in computation and computational knowledge, and is the producer of the company's flagship product, Mathematica, representing a unique blend of major research breakthroughs, outstanding user-oriented design, and world-class software engineering.

Students on the tour viewed beautiful posters and 3D sculptors created through Mathematica. Other highlights included seeing the "periodic table" table, built by one of Wolfram's scientists who is also a skilled woodworker, and the center for Wolfram|Alpha, one of the most complex and ambitious software projects of all time, and a major intellectual and technological achievement.
