NPRE ILLINOIS offers a number of giving opportunities, many of which support our students. The department uses the Nuclear, Plasma, and Radiological Engineering Unrestricted Fund for a host of purposes, among them undergraduate and graduate student recruitment, student research area updates, and student and alumni events.
In addition to holding this unrestricted gift fund, the department administers several endowed gift funds, named for faculty, staff members and/or fellow alumni who have taught, befriended and inspired generations of NPRE alumni and friends.
Endowed Funds
The Felix T. Adler Fund, established in 1987 to provide fellowships to graduate students in NPRE. Adler was one of the first two professors, hired in Fall 1958, to build the Nuclear Engineering Department.
The Roy A. Axford Undergraduate Scholarship, presented to a continuing student of high academic ability and achievement. A number of students and research colleagues of Axford established this scholarship in Spring 2002 in his honor. Axford’s career in NPRE began in 1966.
The Barclay G. Jones Endowment Fund, used to support graduate fellowships in NPRE ILLINOIS. In a grass-roots effort, several alumni and friends established this fund in honor of Jones, an icon of the University of Illinois nuclear engineering program since its inception. Jones earned his master's degree and Ph.D. at the University of Illinois, and made his career here, helping to shape the present day department. The Barclay G. Jones Endowment Fund is the continued effort of NPRE ILLINOIS graduates who also established the Catherine Pritchard Undergraduate Scholarship.
The George H. Miley LENR Undergraduate Scholarship, presented to a highly motivated continuing undergraduate student in the department. Miley, whose career in NPRE ILLINOIS began in 1961, and who has chaired the department, established this fund in 2004.
The Catherine Pritchard Undergraduate Scholarship, presented to a student who has shown academic ability and activities leadership during his or her first three years, to be used during the senior year of study. A group of young NPRE ILLINOIS graduates established the fund to honor Pritchard, a longtime staff member in the NPRE ILLINOIS Student Services Office.
The Bruce W. Spencer Endowment Fund, presented as an award to an outstanding NPRE ILLINOIS student. Several alumni who were Spencer’s fellow students, colleagues at Argonne National Laboratory, and family and friends in his community established the fund to continue Spencer's legacy of education in the context of experimental research related to reactor safety.
The Marvin E. Wyman Memorial Scholarship Fund, used to award scholarships and for other student support. Established in 1984, the fund honors Professor Wyman, hired in Fall 1958 along with Felix Adler to build the Nuclear Engineering Department.
Donations can be made by sending your gift, the name of the fund you wish to give to, and your contact information to the University of Illinois Foundation, P.O. Box 3429, Champaign, IL 61826-9916, or using the online giving service of the University of Illinois Foundation. Please make sure your intent of the gift is very clear when you make a gift to the department.
NPRE ILLINOIS is grateful for the many ways its alumni and friends share their time and talents with the department. Sharing your corporate message and needs with our undergraduate students or your lab research activities with the graduate students in their weekly seminars helps us encourage and develop our students full understanding of the exciting work to be done in the various fields we teach. Including NPRE ILLINOIS students in your campus recruiting activities lets them know how very important their degree(s) will be.
