Title: Military and Civilian Uses of Nuclear Energy
Catalogue Description:Examines theory, global and regional security environments, and arms control and verification relevant to military uses of nuclear energy and the impact of the military uses of nuclear energy on the nuclear electrical power sector. Topics include theory of international conflict, arms control agreements, delivery vehicles, fission and fusion reactions and the role of tritium, detection of fissile materials, and military and civilian uses of nuclear energy in South Asia, the Far East, the Middle East, Russia, and NATO.

Basic Texts: Emerging from the Valley of the Shadow: Towards Global Nuclear Management in the 21st Century, available on the web in html format and in hard copy (314 pages). The chapters of this text include versions of published research articles revised for the course, lecture materials developed for mid-career professionals, and additional materials produced specifically for the course.
Prerequisites: Junior or graduate standing.
Purpose of Course: To give advanced undergraduates and graduates a detailed understanding of the background to history and current issues relevant to nuclear arms control and verification and the historical and current interplay between civilian and military uses of nuclear energy. The cross-listing of this course under the GLOBE rubric is to provide guidance for students wishing to use it to fulfill the Professional, Technical, or Scientific Core for the International Studies Major.
