Title: Writing on Technol & Security

Catalogue Description:Develops writing skills in standard computer, desktop publishing, and electronic publishing formats, based on academic material covered in NPRE 482 / GLBL 482 and NPRE 483 / GLBL 483. That includes theory, global and regional security environments, and arms control and verification relevant to military uses of nuclear energy and the impact of the military uses of nuclear energy on the nuclear electrical power sector; and seminars on technology of domestic and international security and the regional and international contexts that influence the nature of security problems. For graduate credit, writing projects include documentation of computational work using software appropriate for typesetting of mathematical formulas. Credit is not given for both NPRE 481 and either NPRE 482 or NPRE 483.

Basic Texts: Chicago Manual of Style, latest edition, University of Chicago Press & Dreamweaver 4, Macromedia: (San Francisco: 2000)

Prerequisites: Completion of the Composition I requirement, and junior or senior standing; or consent of instructor.

Purpose of Course: Provides writing practice at five levels, based on the academic material included in NPRE 482 and NPRE 483 but with an additional hour per week of class supervision of the development of the students' writing skills and intellectual understanding of the material. The students will develop three drafts each of five papers focusing on a) making text writing style fully compatible with the requirements of the Chicago Manual of Style, b) complete and proper referencing of printed and web-based references, c) content planning and exposition, d) desktop publishing of finished products, and e) web posting in pdf and html formats.
